We are a vertically-focused semantic search startup with a passion for organizing information to facilitate how people discover and filter information to make better decisions. Our team has prior experience at Adaptive Path, Digital Impact (Acxiom), eBay, Hotels.com (Expedia), Intuit, Netcentives (Cendant), simplyhired and Yahoo.



We have received funding from an eminent Sand Hill Road VC, and currently are developing a revolutionary search experience covering all things travel.



OVERVIEW:

We are building the largest, "most useful" index of data, content and semantic headers across several e-commerce categories, and we are looking for a leader who will help develop the road map and help us get there.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cost-effectively and quickly create a database with quality, useful data at the appropriate breadth and depth for the business.



* Own the data collection roadmap

* Identify what products we need to collect and be able to communicate why with evidence from SEO and traffic patterns to back when appropriate. Define strategy and tactics on how we get data (automated, manually, semi-automated, partner feeds, etc.) Work with product marketing and user experience to understand how deep we should go in some areas vs. others. Identify what sites and sources are likely to have data we want. Work with engineering and manual collection teams to define a process for finding more sites. Plan a realistic schedule for acquiring the data. Explain how we can creatively get more data that has the biggest positive bang for our users for the least cost in time or money.

* Own any data partner relationships

o Identify who we can get feeds from. Convince partners that it is in their interest to give us feeds. Identify who we purchase data from, with whom do we contract to get data, manage those relationships, ensure their quality, being very hands on with data when necessary. Work with engineering to integrate partner data into our system. Create project plans and manage integrations to completion.

* Own data quality

o Able to measure the quality of our data, how rich, how accurate, over what geographical or lifestyle areas. Define processes for continuous improvement of data. Define reports that we need to generate to track data quality, data collection progress, source reliability. Able to predict based on current data collection velocity when we will reach certain goals. Provide guidance to head of user experience and SEO on when data can be available in significant quantities.

* Own the metadata

o Applying semantic knowledge of our industry is a key advantage we have over our competitors in travel and over global search (e.g. Google). Work with Kango team to define relationships between entities in our space, define what are our preferred terms in conjunction with user experience and SEO team leaders, define how we map other’s terms into our terms, decide when do we adopt others terms, decide when and at what level we even need to pay attention. Map out structure and plans for growth of metadata into new areas.

* Reports directly to the VP of Product Development



EXPERIENCE:



* Significant experience managing data from multiple sources, merging it together in a single product catalog.

* Experience with SEO game of driving traffic to pages with data a plus, quick to learn a must.

* Can create data reports using standard tools, can write basic SQL, Can draw an entity-relationship diagram, can communicate about many-to-many, one-to-many and hierarchical parent-child relationships.

* Significant experience contributing to a business bottom line by leveraging data.

* Creative problem solver

o Think of new ideas, think of multiple ways to achieve the same result or same experience for end user by supplying different data or by getting same data through different methods.

* Driven to excel

o Reads the reports in the morning and creates an attack plan for the day, studies the reports over time and creates a strategy for the year.

* Strategic and tactical

o Able to develop and communicate long term direction, operational roadmap, concrete milestones and lead execution by both setting up efficient processes and with hands-on contributions.
