POSITION DESCRIPTION SHELTER ADVOCATE



Full Time Reports to: Shelter Manager

The Shelter Advocate will take responsibility for whatever shift is assigned to her, and will work under the general direction of the Shelter Manager. DUTIES: include but are not limited to:

1. Answer Hot Line Crisis Calls as they come in. Provide Crisis Intervention, Information and Referral as needed.

2. Complete call data sheets & forward to Central. Gather statistics by utilizing forms provided.

3. Perform assessments and other client file notations as needed.

4. Provide transportation and accompaniments for legal, medical or other appointments as needed.

5. Be available to clients and their children for counseling, listening, and to help them get their needs met while in the shelter.

6. Work to maintain a sense of peace, safety and harmony among all clients.

7. Facilitate client groups for learning, sharing, and menu/chore planning in the residence.

8. Take responsibility for cleanliness and orderliness of the shelter during the shift.

9. Keep track of supplies and food needed, leaving adequate notes for other shift members.

10. Be a role model and advocate for healthy life skills and a balanced, well-adjusted personality.

11. Attend monthly and quarterly staff meetings as mandated by the Executive Director.

12. Complete required in-service trainings each year. (Up to 8 trainings)

13. Perform any other tasks that may be assigned from time to time

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of:

• Crisis Intervention techniques

• Understanding of the dynamics of Domestic Violence

• Strong Leadership and communication skills

• Completion of 60-Hour Victim Advocacy Training for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

Ability to: assist with temporary restraining orders; interact with other community agencies to obtain victim services; make decisions and independent judgments; communicate effectively with people of diverse socio-cultural backgrounds and temperaments; maintain confidentiality of information; cope with people in crisis; effectively represent the program with community groups, other agencies, the courts and attorneys, the media and the public if necessary; demonstrate tact, compassion, patience and professionalism.

OTHER

• Independent travel may be required. Employee must be willing to attend various workshops, seminars, conferences, etc., that will benefit work experience. Employee is expected to have a vehicle in good working order and current liability insurance.

• Bi-lingual is desired, but not mandatory.

• Employee may be asked to work outside of normal business hours. SafeQuest maintains a policy of time and a half for overtime worked. All overtime must be pre-approved.

• Employees may be required to pass a background check in accordance with applicable law, regulations, and/or policy.

• Health Insurance is provided by SafeQuest after three months of continuous full time employment.
