In general, a Paralegal is responsible for assisting one or more attorneys in carrying out the mission of the Legal Department. Paralegals are expected to have subject matter expertise in one or more specific legal areas (for example, litigation, contracts, corporate or trademark law, or investment company/investment adviser regulation) to enable them to perform quasi-legal and administrative tasks with minimal supervision. In addition, a paralegal should have a solid understanding of the business area(s) he or she is serving, including its goals, function, procedures and operations.

In general, a paralegal will be expected to:

  • draft and review documents such as regulatory filings, contracts, motions, reports, contracts and forms;

  • organize and maintain databases and other document management systems;

  • utilize industry standard software applications and research tools, such as Dialog, e-TEAS and Lexis/Nexis as needed for specific job function

  • draft and implement appropriate procedures, and update as needed;

  • answer questions from internal and external sources relating to his or her function;

  • research and prepare written analyses of legal and other issues;

  • draft non-routine correspondence to clients, shareholders, regulators and/or other organizations;

  • actively participate in meetings or projects relating to his or her function.


    In performing the above, a paralegal is expected to demonstrate solid computer skills, utilize good written and verbal communication skills and exercise sound judgment and independent decision-making.


    Specific job duties include:

  • Take responsibility for preparing trademark and other reports for various business units.

  • Research current use of trademarks.

  • Review advertising and other materials for proper use of trademarks.

  • Prepare and file U.S. trademark applications, Statements of Use, Extensions of Time to Oppose, Oppositions, Renewals, Section 8&15 Affidavits, Assignments and related documents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, preferably online.

  • Correspond with outside and foreign counsel with respect to local trademark matters with minimal supervision.

  • Conduct trademark clearance searches.

  • Independently manage and maintain the trademark docketing system.

  • Review and manage invoices and assign costs centers.

  • Create and maintain trademark and other files.

  • Research for potential infringers and conduct thorough investigations of infringers, including contacting infringers using a pretext and follow up as necessary.

  • Keep abreast of regulatory and industry developments relating to trademark and copyright law and inform appropriate business units of such developments; act as or assist project leader to plan and prioritize large, complex assignments; train, educate and guide others performing similar or related functions as needed.


    We look for

  • College degree and 2+ years of related work experience as a trademark paralegal in either a law firm or in-house setting.

  • Experience managing domestic and foreign trademark portfolios.

  • Strong writing and PC skills, including MS office applications required.

  • Candidate should be proficient with MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), a trademark docket management system such as WebTMS (preferred), Dialog, Dunn & Bradstreet, Lexis/Nexis, USPTO TESS and TARR databases and TEAS online filing system, iManage and Adobe Photoshop 6.0.

  • Candidate must be able to demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills and solid analytical and organizational skills.

  • Resourcefulness, good judgment, careful attention to detail, ability to follow through and manage deadlines are essential.

  • Cooperativeness and flexibility are also important attributes.

  • Candidate must be able to use time efficiently to meet multiple deadlines and to take responsibility for completing assignments with minimal supervision.

  • Subject matter expertise in trademark law is required.

  • Additional expertise in Copyright law is a plus.

  • Knowledge of financial services industry in general, and Franklin Templeton organization in particular, also preferred.
